Pennsylvania law requires motor vehicle owners to carry insurance. Driving without insurance may result in suspension of your license and registration, as well as fines and restoration fees. Every registered vehicle must be covered by liability insurance that covers others for losses resulting from injury or property damage. When you register your vehicle, you must provide your insurance identification card or other documentation from your insurance company to prove that you have insurance. Failure to produce your insurance identification card when you are involved in an accident or stopped by the police constitutes a violation. You are also in violation if your insurance carrier reports to the Department of Transportation that your insurance has lapsed. Your vehicle registration will be suspended for three months if you allow your insurance to lapse. Unless you can prove that the vehicle was not operated without insurance, your driver's license will also be suspended for three months. The minimum fine for driving an uninsured vehicle is $300. You will also have to pay restoration fees of $50 each to have your registration and license reinstated. If you are not able to get insurance coverage, contact Pennsylvania's Assigned Risk Plan at (800) 477-6146 for assistance.
