Because he doubts they'll be able to pay their rent fully and on time.
A good landlord allows people he thinks will be responsible to rent property that he owns. He has a large investment in the property. There are a lot of people who think nothing of trashing a rental unit which costs the landlord a lot of money to repair. Would you want someone in your house that did this?
The landlord also wants to rent to tenants that will pay their rent on time and without excuses. The group you describe don't sound like responsible people at all. I sure wouldn't rent a house to them.
because its his perogative and he doesn't have to if he does not want to...geez, on ssi, a kid on the way....
Freedom of contract. Landlords have no obligation to rent to every applicant. In most places, there are screening procedures in place to check whether prospective tenant will be able to meet obligations. If, however, landlord somehow exceeds the bounds of screening, tenant may in certain circs make a claim against landlord for discrimination. You have to check residential tenancy law where you live for particulars.
I have an agent that rents out the apartments and homes I own. I will not rent to unmarried couples. My agent has several units that he owns and we all agree on this issue.
Someone that knows renters and spots someone that probably won't pay rent and won't take care of the property. If you could afford the rent you would have been able to afford birth control.
Obviously you and your herd do not qualify.
Because it's about money not charity.
The odds are that damage will take place increases the more kids you have and the younger they are. The odds strife will occur increases when they are not married. And if you're not fiscally responsible if something does go wrong what are the odds the landlord will get their money?
Middle aged (30s-50's) married couples with no kids and stable jobs tend to be the better tenants. Unless someone in real estate wants to tell me something different.
But if they have all that mess going on then I suggest they apply for section 8.
A neighbors tree fell in my yard and hit my house, can I move the tree debris back onto their property to avoid the cost of removal? This is a Florida property.

We have someone staying with us. Not the best situation. Came here with hardly any warning. We are giving him 3 nights and 3 nights only.

Meaning the 2 of you might pay rent for awhile, but once one income goes, rent won't, or probably won't, be made.

Keep in mind renting is a business. If you really can't find a place, there's places that are into giving people in that situation a roof over their heads.
