Search engines are useful tools to find any information on the Internet. Ideally, you can type anything you want into the search engine, and related results will come up. With the vast number of websites on the Internet, however, searches will come up with plenty of results. You can make sure your website domain name rises in the search rankings by registering with search engines. Most search engines, especially the big ones like Google or Bing, have "spiders," that essentially browse the Internet and take a record of the websites on it automatically. Many of these search engines also have tools that allow you to physically submit your domain name to the search engine itself, allowing your site to be indexed faster and bypassing the need for the spiders. Many large search engines have a tool accessible from your browser that lets you physically input your domain name to add it to their records. Generally, once you submit your domain (only the home page is necessary) the search engine will add it and index the rest of your website automatically. Each search engine, such as Google, Bing and Yahoo, has a slightly different method of submission, but it is almost always a short process consisting of typing in your domain with the http:// prefix, then submitting your request. It is important to note that even if you physically submit your domain, it will not immediately show up in search results. It has to be indexed and processed first, at which point certain relevant keywords will start to bring up your site. It is possible to optimize your website for future searches, even if you have submitted them already. You can use a site map, which is essentially an XML file that contains all the URLs to all your web pages and attaching meta data to them. This helps automatic searches by adding keywords and other relevant data about the entire website instead of just individual pages.Basics
Submitting Your Domain
The submission tools for Google, Yahoo! and Bing have been added to the Resources section below, but you can find tools for other search engines by using a simple Internet search. For example, "add my domain to [search engine]" will usually bring up instructions and a link to where you can add your domain to any number of search engine databases.Site Maps and Meta Tags
You can also use meta tags to influence search data such as keywords and descriptions of your website. By putting this information inside your web pages, the spiders will read it and adjust their indexing accordingly. This is a sample of the meta data:
<head>
<meta name="description" content="This is a website about dogs." />
<meta name="keywords" content="dogs, pet care, dog food" />
<meta name="author" content="Bob" />
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1" />
