The US Army is widely respected as one of the world's most effective fighting forces. Much of this success can be attributed to the advanced, standard-issue army gear employed by American troops. The official US Army website states that combat ready soldiers carry at least 16 pieces of gear when on duty. The term gear covers specific uniform and weapon requirements. The Soldier Requirements Division of the Army Infantry Center In Fort Benning, Georgia notes that troops in Iraq can carry 60-100 pounds of equipment gear while on patrol. The Army Combat Uniform, or ACU, consists of camouflage-colored pants, jacket and cap. Standard accessories found on these uniforms include rank insignia, name tape, unit patch, and US Flag insignia. The Advanced Combat Helmet functions as a tactical advantage for soldiers. Besides offering protection from fragmentation, these helmets are designed to improve the wearer's vision, hearing and comfort. The Improved Outer Tactical Vest, or IOTV, protects soldiers against fragments, small arms hits and armor-piercing rounds. Weighing 30 pounds, the IOTV can be removed quickly in emergencies. The Modular Lightweight Load Carrying Equipment, or MOLLE, is a combination high-tech vest and utility belt. Typically used for storing canteens and hydration bladders, MOLLEs feature removable, modular pouches for stowing other items. The US Army intends to make gear lighter, stronger and more advanced. Planned upgrades (as of 2010) include lightweight .50 caliber machine guns and miniature, touch-screen computers.
