Help answer this question below.
Because alcohol is a depressant.
Some people believe that alchohal heightens what your already feeling before you actually started to drink. If you were happy before you started to drink, then you would act like a happy drunk. If you were angry before you drank, then you will be a furious drunk. If you were sad (which is your case possibly) before you drank, then you would be a depressed drunk. (Don't take the term "a _____ drunk" too seriously, just a bit of humor. I'm not saying your a drunk :P )
My dad says that what I said above is what happens to him, but it might be different for certain people.
So far, all pretty good answers, but let me give a different perspective. If you look at the name of most liquor stores you will see the heading "Wines and Spirits", I believe there is a diabolical "spirit" associated with alcohol that leads, most of the time, to destructive or self- destructing ideations. Even suicide thoughts, in some cases it is called the "spirit of suicide".
Be very careful of what you put in your body. There are forces out there not even science can explain.
Its probably the after affects of getting drunk that make you feel suicidal.
For example when you get a hang over, you may feel so sick to your stomach to the point where you don't want to live anymore. Ones head might be aching so much, that they see no point to living anymore. If you are addicted to alcohol, side affects such as suicidal ideation, anxiety, and depression come along with it.
It tends to mellow most people out. A few it increases their aggressive tendencies. If it creates suicidal urges in you, you should refrain from drinking any of it.
You may have another problem in addition to drinking, often depression and alcohol abuse go hand and hand. Consider going to your doctor and having a mental health assessment. Thoughts of suicide are VERY serious, the technical term for it is "suicide ideation". Please consider getting help before it worsens.

I'm 21, drink too much and am a social drug taker. My body struggles to break down alcohol now, I frequently wake up still drunk.

Is it really on it's own?
I felt upset and like that already without the alcohol but that alcohol just increases the way I feel.
But if i'm in a good mood it enhances the good mood too.
