Does drinking Coke or coffee through a straw really help keep your teeth white?

One of my friends who has amazing teeth does this (she also whitens her teeth a lot), and I just saw someone at the office doing this. Does it actually work, or is it just that people who tend to whiten their teeth also take extra precautions like this, and it's the teeth whitening that actually makes the difference? Would love to hear from some dentists out there...

There appears to be some support among some dentists for the idea that drinking through a straw could help keep your teeth healthier because the sugars and acids are not directly hitting your tooth surface.

According to Teenage Dental Health: "Not only is sugar harmful to teeth, acidic flavor additives can also erode and damage tooth enamel. There are simple ways for teens to limit the harmful effects of sodas. Sipping soda through a straw cuts down on the contact the beverage has with teeth and rinsing the mouth with water after drinking soda can also reduce the risk of cavities."

No because I dont think you would always drink a Coke or a coffee with a straw plus the fluid still hits your teeth like any other drink would , not as much as just sipping it but it still does. Coffee has tannens like tea and if any come near your teeth which it will - remember the back of the teeth are as important as the front even though you see the back less- these tannens will stain your teeth. Its a good idea to brush and floss often and perhaps keep track how many coffees or coke you have daily. All of these will help reduce the staining and far less expensive as some teeth whiteners can be- choosing a toothpaste with this added is a good choice.
