According to the Penguin Dictionary of Saints (Penguin Books, 1995), Erasmus, also known as Elmo, as a second sentury C.E. bishop in Syria. He fled to Formiae, Italy following persecution under Emperor Diocletian and was sustained with food brought by a raven and then rescued by an angel. Eventually he was martyred by in 303 C.E. The web site above lists him as patron of many things, which were not confirmed by the According to the New Catholic Encyclopedia (Thomson Gale, 2003), vol. 15, article on "Patron Saints." Feast day is June 2nd. St. Elmo's Fire, the static discharge sometimes seen on ships, is seen as a sign of his protection.
