Everyone has at least one thing about themselves that they would like to change. For many people, the one character flaw that needs correction is being resigned to just let life happen. But when life just hands you things and you take them, there is a good chance you will not get what you want. By being proactive, you can make sure that you get what you want, whether it is a large savings account, a successful business or a pat on the back from the people you admire most. Kathleen Nadeau, the author of several books pertaining to Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and the director of the Chesapeake ADHD Center of Maryland, recommends forming one new, proactive habit at a time in your quest to become proactive. If you try to make multiple changes to your life at once, you are more likely to fail and give up on your ultimate goal of becoming proactive. Focus all of your energy on changing that one habit, and when you have conquered your complacency in that one area of your life, move on to creating another proactive habit. Kevin Eikenberry of SuperPerformance.com says that becoming proactive involves shedding your fears. Many people are afraid of being imperfect, being rejected and making mistakes. This fear of the unknown leads to procrastination. Instead of thinking about the negative things that could happen, consider all of the positive outcomes and how they could change your life for the better. An article on the website for TAXI, a company that connects musicians to the moguls that create record deals, talks about how singer Ani DiFranco jump-started her career by establishing her own record label in her parents' garage. The same article talks about how Slash was attending a concert where Matt Sorum was performing; Slash was so impressed that he offered Sorum a spot in Guns 'N Roses. Sorum chose to play various clubs in hopes of getting noticed instead of waiting for opportunity to knock; as a result of being proactive, he became a rock legend and made millions of dollars. To lead a proactive lifestyle, you have to visualize your success rather than predicting your own failure.Focus on One Thing at a Time
