    The first Grammy for rap was awarded to DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Will Smith, for "Parents Just Don't Understand" in 1989. Smith along with fellow rap artists Jazzy Jeff, L. L. Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa boycotted the 1989 Grammy Awards when it decided not to broadcast the rap award ceremony during prime time.
