Gutzon Borglum began drilling into the 5,725-foot mountain in 1927. Completed by his son, Lincoln Borglum in 194l, 14 years later. Cost $1 million funded mostly by National Recovery Act . Originally was planned to be more free standing busts of the prezes, his death led to a quicker finish with the faces on the mountain. What, no more Rushmore?
