    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Just as substance abuse can be caused by a wide variety of factors, substance abuse recovery involves a number of issues in the user's life. These issues can range from the basic physical withdrawal symptoms the user must overcome, to various lifestyle changes that may become necessary in order to make recovery possible.

    Physical

Physical drug or alcohol dependence is the most overt issue involved in substance abuse recovery. It must be dealt with first or recovery cannot occur. Other physical issues can include underlying medical problems requiring addictive pain or sleep medications.

    Coping Skills

The recovering addict will need new coping skills to make it though the day without the effects of drugs and alcohol. This requires a reframing of everyday life, and acceptance of a different type of experiential awareness.

    Emotional/Psychological

Because drugs and alcohol can provide a temporary euphoria, the recovering addict may experience depression or flattening of affect. Group meetings and talk therapy can assist in the transition.

    Social

The recovering addict may need to make choices regarding friends or loved ones who may still be caught up in substance abuse. As painful as it may be, some relationships may need to be severed.

    Access to Services

Services such as detox, rehab clinics, recovery groups and psychiatric therapy may be limited or inaccessible. Location or expense may keep the user from accessing these treatments and services.
