Jones arrived in Virginia to settle the affairs of his brother, who had died. He volunteered for the Continental Navy and was given the rank of first lieutenant on the U.S.S. Alfred. As commander of the Alfred, Jones captured British merchants. Later, assigned to the U.S.S. Ranger, Jones orchestrated the capture of the Drake, the first victory over a British warship.
Ultimately Jones achieved the rank of captain in the United States Navy. After his employment with the United States Navy, Jones was given the rank of rear admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy, where he served on the Vladimir.
Jones retired from all naval duties in 1790, when he began to live in Paris. He received a minor United States political appointment in 1792 shortly before his death of a brain tumor.
Jones' remains are located in a funeral receptacle at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. There is also a John Paul Jones memorial in Washington, D.C.
During an engagement with a British ship during the war, Jones was credited with the famous quote, "I have not yet begun to fight."
