John Gutzon Borglum (1871-1941) usually just called Gutzon Borglum . Born in Idaho, educated in Nebraska and St. Mary's College , Kansas. Studied at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Member in the Society of Beaux Arts and the Royal Society of British Artists. Painting "Staging in California" declared a masterpiece in 1890 .First attempt at mountain carving 1916, Confederate Memorial at Stone Mountain, Georgia ended due to misunderstanding with the project's sponsors. A mountain carving of Chief Crazy Horse was in the planning stages at the time of Borglum's death on March 6, 1941 in Chicago. He is buried in a crypt at the foot of Mount Rushmore.
