The acronym BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System, a critical component of a computer's motherboard. Users flash the BIOS to update the information it needs to help the computer function properly.

    BIOS Features

The BIOS software program tells a computer what to do when it first turns on. The program also manages the data that flows between the computer's installed operating system and attached peripheral devices, such as a keyboard or printer.

    Flash BIOS

The BIOS is stored on an EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory) chip located on a computer's motherboard. Flash BIOS, or flashing the BIOS, is the process of erasing the EPROM chip's existing code and replacing it with new code.

    History

According to the NOSPIN Group, earlier non-erasable EPROM chips were securely attached to a computer's motherboard. Upgrading the BIOS was more difficult because it required replacing the entire chip or motherboard.

    Benefits

Flashing the BIOS permits manufacturers to improve a computer's performance by adding new features and settings, such as for newly available peripheral devices, and correcting errors in the BIOS's original code.

    Warning

Avoid power outages when flashing the BIOS. Any interruption in the computer's power source can sabotage the rewriting process, and a brand-new BIOS chip will be required.

Flash BIOS is a term used to describe the process of updating a computer's motherboard. It is usually done to increase compatibility or increase the performance capabilities of a computer. While it become an easier process to perform over the years, some computer experts do not recommend novices attempt it without assistance, as it can permanently damage a computer if done using improper methods.
