Years ago, wedding etiquette experts said that mothers of the grooms should stay away from ivory (to not match the bride), red (too punchy) and black (can suggest mourning). But there are not many rules of fashion that still stand from the old days. As long as the dress is tasteful and works for the mother of the groom, most agree color is not that big of a deal. If mothers of the grooms are highly unsure, though, ask the bride for advice and see what she thinks about you wearing black to her special day.
Black is a color of darkness and sadness. This color can come off as classy, especially if the wedding colors are the classic black and white theme. But for the most part, black is not a color that most would like to see at their wedding, at least worn by the mother of the groom. Black signifies mourning, and some who see this at a wedding might think that the mother of the groom is unhappy with the marriage.
The color the mother of the groom wears to the wedding is ultimately her choice, but the bride's advice cannot hurt. Ask the bride what she would think if you wore black to the wedding and decide with her wishes in mind.
