    Before becoming the President of the United States, Barack Obama worked in several different positions. The majority of his positions were located in Illinois dealing with public service.

    University of Chicago

    Obama served as a senior lecturer in the Law School at the University of Chicago for 12 years. According to PolitiFact, he taught "Constitutional Law III: Equal Protection and Substantive Due Process; Voting Rights and the Democratic Process; and Current Issues in Racism and the Law," beginning in 1993.

    Community Work

    According to Whitehouse.gov, Obama worked with churches in Chicago to rebuild areas affected by closed steel plants after he finished college. After law school, Obama also oversaw a voter registration drive in the city.

    Illinois State Senator

    While working at the University of Chicago, Obama also served as an Illinois state senator from 1997-2004.

    U.S. Senator

    Obama served as a U.S. Senator, representing Illinois, from Jan. 3, 2005, to Nov. 16, 2008. Whitehouse.gov lists making federal spending records available online as one of his major accomplishments while serving in the U.S. Senate.

    President of the United States

    Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States on Nov. 4, 2008, and was sworn in Jan. 20, 2009. According to an article by the Wall Street Journal on Jan. 27, 2010, President Obama had a 50 percent approval rating as he began his second year in office.
