The Cherokee Indians originally wore clothing made of animal skins; they used fur in the winter, sometimes with the fur turned to the inside. Distinctive headdresses were made of stiff animal hairs. The Cherokee men wore leggings and breech-cloths (pronounced "breech-clouts"). Animal-skin breech-cloths were leather pieces that went between the legs and draped over a leather-strip belt. In the winter the men wore animal-skin fur coats. Women wore poncho style tops with wrap-around skirts made originally of animal skins or woven plant fiber, and later of cotton or wool. Fur capes, tied at the left shoulder, were worn in the winter. Cherokees did not wear feather headdresses. They wore a headdress (roach) made of porcupine quills or stiff hairs attached to a bone, heavy leather base or hair ornament. The headdress stood straight up from the head in a narrow row and then curved over the head down the neck. Buckskin boots or slipper-like moccasins, either plain or decorated, were worn by all. Men wore woven belts and decorated arm bands; necklaces made with thongs holding animal teeth, bone, claw, shell, copper plates or carved shell plates; and often tattoos. The women made clay beads for decorations. Cherokee Clothing and AdornmentMen's Clothing
