    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Inhalants abuse involves inhaling chemicals from fumes, vapors or gas to get high. Many people use common household items like cooking sprays, bleach or pain thinner. This practice can lead to a number of serious problems, including death.

    Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome (SDS)

SDS syndrome can trigger fatal heart failure. Deep inhalation decreases oxygen in the body. The resulting rush of adrenalin causes the heart to stop beating; you can die within minutes, according to the Alliance of Consumer Education.

    Asphyxiation

Toxic fumes can fill the lungs--leaving no room for oxygen. You can suffocate to death, according to KidsHealth.org.

    Brain Damage

Short and long-term effects on the brain include hallucinations, personality changes, mood swings, memory loss and trouble speaking.

    Organ Damage

Long-term use can lead to liver, lung and kidney damage. They may or may not be reversible once inhalant abuse ends.

    Other Problems

Other potential problems include hearing loss, muscle weakness, headaches, poor reflexes, impaired judgment, bone marrow damage, nosebleeds and limb spasms.
