Stack and Tilt is a golf swing model that contradicts much of the standard thinking among teaching professionals. The body remains "stacked" over the ball with no weight shift in the backswing, so the club hits the ground at the same spot each time--in theory, creating consistency. Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett, disciples of swing guru Mac O'Grady, developed their swing over a period of 20 years. The breakthrough came in 2006, when three of the tour players they were teaching won events within six weeks of each other. With this new swing, the golfer stays on his front foot during the backswing, tilts the spine toward the target--a motion called a reverse pivot--and slides his hips toward the target on the downswing. All three features would be considered swing faults in a traditional golf swing. Plummer and Bennett market their swing method through the sale of DVDs on their website. They also run golf schools and workshops that teach their method. Butch Harmon, No. 1 on Golf Digest's list of 50 greatest teachers, isn't a fan of the method. "Personally, I don't teach a system," he said. "I don't believe there's one set of fundamentals for everyone, and I don't think Stack and Tilt is for everyone." Among the tour pros who have used the Stack and Tilt swing are Brad Faxon and Aaron Baddeley, both winners on the PGA Tour, and 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir. Both Baddeley and Weir announced in 2009 that they were abandoning the new method.
