Thong underwear does not promote breathability. Even if it is made of cotton, thongs are still breeding grounds for bacteria, according to professor and physician Jill Maura Rabin in a Self magazine article. Doctors recommend that women consider other underwear types or alternating thongs with other types of underwear. While cotton thongs are preferable to thongs made from other fabrics, they cannot be considered breathable because of way they sit on the body. While no studies have confirmed that thong underwear leads to increased infections, reports from gynecologists indicate that thong underwear is not breathable and, because of that, more women are having recurrent infections.
