  • Motor carriers must abide by certain legal requirements and government regulations in order to operate. Interstate commerce is a huge business in this country and it is responsible for moving just about everything that we consume day-to-day.

    What is trucking authority?

Trucking authority is the legal authorization to operate a motor carrier, freight forwarding service or freight broker agency in the United States. This authority is administrated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

    Operating Numbers

The FMCSA grants operating authority according to business types. These authorities are displayed by MC, MX and FF numbers.

What business types are required to obtain an authority?

If you intend to operate a business as a "for hire", contract or common motor carrier, your company will be required to file an application with the FMCSA and be granted an authority. Businesses involved in the brokerage and forwarding of freight in interstate commerce also must be granted an authority from the FMCSA. Special guidelines and requirements are also in place for carriers that transport passengers and household goods.

    Insurance Requirements

Motor carriers are required to maintain liability insurance as set forth by FMCSA policies. Cargo insurance is also a consideration for businesses involved in the transportation of freight.

    Exempt Companies

Private carriers that transport exempt commodities and companies which operate within a federally recognized "commercial zone" are not required to have an operating authority.
