You know your dog cannot be pregnant, yet she is lactating as though she is. Your dog might be experiencing a false pregnancy, which can cause milk production.
False Pregnancy
A false pregnancy means that a non-pregnant dog displays many of the symptoms that of a pregnant dog.
Symptoms
One symptom of false pregnancy a dog lactating, with milk coming from its nipples. She also might have a swollen abdomen or display maternal urges, such as preparing a nest or acting like a mother to an inanimate object.
Causes
False pregnancy is usually caused by a hormonal imbalance or abnormal ovaries.
Treatment
False pregnancy can go away on its own, but often reoccurs. Spaying the dog can provide a long-term cure. Hormone medications also can be prescribed.
Milk Production
Avoid any stimulation of the dog's nipples, as this will encourage milk production. Do not allow the dog to lick them.
Precautions
Work with your veterinarian to treat your dog's false pregnancy. Be careful when handling a dog with this condition, since she might become more aggressive and irritable.
