  • Canopy beds have been in use for centuries. Although originally developed for practical reasons, today they are used for decorative purposes as well.

    One Theory

One belief is that during Medieval times the canopy was created to prevent debris-- thatch, dirt, insects, droppings--from falling on sleeping people below. History Magazine challenges this, however, with the thought that those able to afford a canopy bed would have lived under a more stable roof.

    More Likely Origin

Another theory into the origins of canopy beds asserts that they were developed in the early days of European castles. Noble families, whose servants generally slept in the same room, began the use of canopy beds for privacy and for warmth.

    Bed Structure

A canopy bed consisted of a bed head, or tester, with posts at the corners at least four feet high and connected at the top by horizontal poles. Fabric was stretched over the top, with draperies extending below the level of the mattress.

    Fabrics

In the 1300s, wool was the fabric of choice for window and bed draperies, giving occupants much better warmth and protection in drafty castles. Decorative tapestries were also incorporated into the bed hangings.

    Uses Today

Canopy beds are still found in homes today and are popular in resorts and hotels for their romantic appeal.
