  • There is nothing quite like hitting the perfect shot on on a pool table where the ball rolls exactly how you intended. Part of this is finesse with a cue, the other part is how well-maintained the pool felt is. Over time, even the best felt will wear, leaving patches where the ball doesn't roll properly. Installing new felt will bring life back to a dead table.

    Preparation

Clean your pool table before installing your new felt. Make sure there are no crumbs or other debris that will leave small bumps in the new felt. Make sure all screws on the table are tightened and the table is level. Check that the tabletop if free of low spots as well, as this will effect the stretching of the felt over the table. The material under the felt is called the slate. If the slate is not level, you may want to replace it as well before installing a new felt. Make sure to fill the joints of the table, at the corners of the slate with a filler. Beeswax can be bought for this purpose.

    New Felt

Place the felt over the table with the playable side up toward the ceiling. Let the cloth hang over the foot end of the table and the right side, with just enough cloth hanging over the head of the table and the left side to staple. The cloth will have to be stapled on the left side toward the head of the table, with four staples an inch apart. The felt is then pulled and stretched across the table, then stapled at the other head of the table again, opposite the first set of staples. Then at the foot of the table, the felt is stapled opposite the first set of staples after being stretched, then finished at the last corner. The felt is then pulled toward the side pocket, where it is stapled again. The felt is then tacked down on both the head end and the foot end of the table, stretched so that it is taut against the slate. After the head and foot are tacked, the cloth should be pulled up into the corner pockets and tacked to the underside of the slate to secure it in place. Any excess cloth should be cut away from the pool table once it is fully stretched and stapled into place.
