  • Chlorine is a chemical used to treat water in pools and hot tubs. While it helps keep the water clean, chlorine can also have a harsh, drying effect on your hair and can even change your hair color. If your hair has been damaged by exposure to chlorine, there are several ways you can repair the damage.

    Rinsing

Always rinse your hair right after leaving the pool to remove chlorine quickly. If you don't have a shower available, pour a bottle of clean water over your hair---sparkling water works even better.

    Shampooing

It's helpful to shampoo directly after swimming. Look for shampoos with sodium thiosulfate, which helps remove the color and odor of chlorine from hair.

    Conditioning

To repair damage done by chlorine, you can condition your hair and return the moisture it lost. Alternate between a regular conditioner and a deep conditioner. A hot-oil treatment is another option to bring dry, brittle hair back to being smooth and soft.

    Removing Color

Chlorine can cause chemicals in pool water to stick to your hair. These chemicals, such as copper, can cause light-colored hair to change color (it often changes to shades of green). You can neutralize this type of color change by dissolving two aspirin tablets in lukewarm water and pouring the mixture through your hair several times.

    Prevention

Protect your hair from further damage by limiting its contact with chlorine. Wet your hair thoroughly before swimming and comb in a light conditioner, or choose the most effective barrier against chlorine contact: a swimming cap. Using both methods in combination offers even better results. Condition your hair before putting on a swimming cap and you'll be giving your hair a deep-conditioning treatment while you work out.
