  • A grade six (6) pay scale in the Army would fall under two categories. The first is officer's pay, an O-6, which also is known as a colonel. The second "six" pay scale is a staff sergeant's pay, an E-6.

    Army Pay Scale

An Army pay scale is divided into three categories: officer, warrant officer and enlisted. The amount of base pay one would make is determined by rank and time in service. A colonel or staff sergeant's time in service can vary greatly. Refer to the current pay chart, which can be fount at http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/militarypaytables.html, to be certain what the exact pay would be.

    A Colonel's Pay (O-6)

When determining what a colonel (O-6) makes, you must know how much time in service he has. In accordance with the the 2010 military pay chart, a colonel with 20 years of service, for example, would make a base monthly pay of $9,095.70, and a colonel with 22 years would make $9,934.80 a month.

    A Staff Sergeant's Pay (E-6)

A staff sergeant's pay also is dependent upon time in service. A staff sergeant with 10 years of service, for example, would make $3,148.20 a month.

    Basic Allowance for Housing

A colonel or staff sergeant, like any other active-duty soldier, is entitled to a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) if he does not live in government housing. Housing allowances are determined by a soldier's zip code. Typically, housing allowances are higher for officers than for enlisted men and women.

    Basic Allowance for Subsistence

Another allowance for the colonel or staff sergeant is for subsistence. This is a set rate that is divided into two categories, officer and enlisted. A staff sergeant, an enlisted rank, would receive $323.87 a month. A colonel, an officer, would receive less, at $223.04 a month.

    Pay raises

Each year, Congress authorizes an annual pay raise, which affects the military pay chart for that year. In 2010, Congress authorized a 3.4 percent pay raise. Always refer to current listings to ensure accuracy.
