Canine bladder infections are more common than you may think. On average, about one out of every 14 dogs will acquire a bladder infection at least once during its lifetime. The good news is that a dog's bladder infection can be treated from home. A number of simple steps can be followed to successfully relieve your dog of his bladder infection.

Citrus Juices

Offer the dog citrus juice. The citrus will elevate the acidity in the dog's urine. The acidity makes it difficult for the bacteria to attach to the dog's bladder. Most dogs, however, will reject the taste of citrus juice, so it is helpful to offer the citrus juice in small doses or with food treats. The goal is to get the dog to drink about 8 oz. of citrus juice per day until the infection is resolved. The best juices to give your dog include cranberry, orange, blueberry, lemon and lime.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix 1/2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar into the dog's food once a day until the bladder infection is resolved. Since the dog is constantly flushing the bladder, it can be difficult to sustain an elevated acidity in the dog's urine. Citrus juices are not likely to be effective on their own. Adding apple cider vinegar to the dog's daily food will help sustain the elevated acidity level in the dog's urine, thus making it difficult for the bacteria to survive.

Plenty of Water

Encourage the dog to drink as much clean, fresh water as possible. While it is important to sustain an elevated acidity in the dog's urine, it is essential that the dog's bladder be flushed frequently through urination. Allow the dog opportunities to urinate often outside. If your dog drinks plenty of water, this will help speed the process of eliminating the bacteria that is causing the bladder infection.
