  • Tasers, also known as "stun guns," usually work by shooting hooks into a person's body and then send a large amount of electric current into the individual, sometimes as much as 50,000 volts.

    Effects

Sending thousands of volts of electricity through the human body could induce a fatal reaction, especially to those on illegal drugs which raise the heart rate, such as methamphetamines.

    Function

One of the main reasons that police use stun guns is so they can subdue an unruly suspect without needing to use a firearm. However, stun guns can still kill, the antithesis of their intended use.

    Criticism

The use of certain highly powerful tasers constitute a form of torture, states the United Nations Committee on Torture. Tasers can cause the sufferer an incredible amount of pain--a violation of the U.N. Convention Against Torture to which most nations have signed.

    Important Fact

From 2001 to 2009, 351 have died in the US as a result of taser electrocution--some of these people had no weapons on them and posed little threat, according to Amnesty International.

    Potential

In 2008, the first taser-proof vest appeared. Some weapons experts, like Steve Wright, believe that people may start aiming tasers at the face because of the possibility of someone wearing a taser proof vest, adding another potential danger: blindness.
