  • The warm, wet, bubbly nature of a spa makes it appealing to us, but it also can make a poorly maintained spa attractive to microbes that can make us sick. Sanitizers kill the bacteria that can grow in water of spas and hot tubs.

    Chlorine

Chlorine is the main sanitizer used in pools. It can be used in spas, too. Chlorine tablets and chlorine granules are created specifically for spa use.

    Bromine

Bromine generally is available in the form of tablets that go into a floater dispenser in the spa. Bromine contains some chlorine and has become one of the more popular chemical sanitizers in recent years.

    Not Pools

Spas are not the same as pools. They have smaller volumes and higher temperatures. The two cannot be treated properly in exactly the same manner.

    Bromine vs. Chlorine

Many people choose bromine over chlorine because bromine is effective and doesn't produce gases at temperatures higher than 98 degrees F. Bromine produces fewer odors than chlorine, and its efficiency is practically independent of pH levels.

    Test the Water

Use spa test strips to monitor sanitizer and water balance levels. Also use a bacteria test in your spa. If the spa water smells sour or foul, it likely has problems. Smell, test, sanitize and monitor.
