    A herniated, or slipped, disk is a rupture of the fibrocartilaginous material, or annulus fibrosus, that surrounds the intervertebral disk. The rupture occurs when the disk's center portion, which contains a gelatinous substance called the nucleus pulposus, is released into the patient's body.
