  • Mold in the home has been implicated in several health conditions, depending on the sensitivities of the inhabitants. Residents who have pre-existing respiratory problems may have complications due to the presence of mold in the home, or none at all. Otherwise healthy individuals may exhibit certain symptoms after being exposed to mold, while others may not.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, average, healthy individuals who have been exposed to house mold can exhibit symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, eye irritation and skin irritation.

    Asthma

Asthma sufferers have been known to have an increase in asthma symptoms after exposure to mold. Children have been shown to have a higher likelihood of developing asthma after prolonged exposure to house mold.

    Pneumonitis

Individuals with a susceptibility to pneumonitis can also have symptoms develop or irritated by the presence of house mold.

    Other Conditions

Mold spores significantly increase the amount of measurable indoor air pollution. Exposure to this type of pollution has been shown to cause pulmonary hemorrhage in infants, memory loss, exercise intolerance and fatigue in otherwise healthy individuals.

    Prevention/Solution

House mold grows in damp, dark environments and can be typically found in basements, bathrooms and kitchens. The only way to prevent mold growth is to reduce the amount of moisture in the areas where it grows. Proper ventilation also helps.
