  • A hysterectomy can be used to treat many different gynecological issues. There are two methods of performing a hysterectomy, abdominal and vaginal. Both methods can be used to treat the same issues, but because a vaginal hysterectomy is less invasive it is often viewed as the most beneficial process.

    Hysterctomy

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed to treat gynecological issues. Fibroids, endometriosis, gynecologic cancer and uterine prolapse are conditions that can be treated with a hysterectomy.

    Abdominal Hysterectomy

An abdominal hysterectomy is performed by making an incision through the lower abdomen. Once the incision is made the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries can be removed from the pelvic area.

    Vagional Hysterectomy

A vaginal hysterectomy is performed by making an incision inside if the vagina. The uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes are then removed through the vaginal opening.

    Benefits

Vaginal hysterectomy is a quicker procedure that allows for faster recovery time. The average hospital stay after a vaginal hysterectomy is one to three days, with full recovery within one to two weeks.

    Precations

Avoid lifting anything over 20 pounds after surgery. Avoid vaginal intercourse for six weeks after surgery. This will prevent infection and unnecessary strain on the pelvic area as it heals.
