  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a neurological and biological disorder that causes the sufferer to exhibit sporadic and often extremely active behavior, such as butting into conversations.

    Misconceptions

Children are naturally very energetic and active, but extremely long periods of activity and more frequent bouts of inattentive behavior signal that the child may have ADD.

    Types

Children and adults can become afflicted with ADD. Adults with ADD tend to have more problems with focusing in on a task and organizing their personal space than hyperactivity.

    Time Frame

For a doctor to diagnose a person with ADD, the patient must show signs of the disorder for at least six months and to a greater degree than is normal, especially in children.

    Tips

People with ADD move about when they try to sit for a long time, cannot focus on details when talking about something and may drift around during conversations.

    Effects

ADD does not make people unemployable--they often have success in the workplace. However, those with ADD may develop problems with depression and find it hard to stay in a committed relationship.
