<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Lying Can Be Kinder
Telling a lie could be better than the truth when telling the truth results in an insult or a fact that will make a person feel bad about themselves. Telling lies to children about Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny could be considered better than the truth, because it brings the child innocent joy and sparks their imagination.
On the Other: We Know Lying Is Wrong
Honesty is an important personal characteristic that everyone wishes were more common. People teach their kids that telling the truth is the proper way to go about their lives, and being able to trust one another may be the most important quality in a relationship.
Bottom Line
Telling a lie is never better than telling the truth as long as the person telling the truth is stating an actual fact and is doing it with good intentions. Even if it is hurtful, it is appropriate to tell a person a truth that is meant to help them. Lying to a person is not likely to help in most cases.
