The skeletal system is made up out of the 206 bones in our body. It serves many vital purposes which allow our body to properly function so that we can live.
Organ Protection
The skeletal system protects many organs which are involved with several systems in the body such as the brain for the nervous system and the heart for the circulatory system.
Movement
The skeletal and the muscular systems work together to cause movement. When the muscles expand or contract they pull on the tendons which connect muscles and bones together.
Blood Cell Production
All red blood cells, many white blood cells and various other immune system cells are produced within the marrow of larger bones. Red blood cells are involved with the circulatory system and white blood cells are involved with the immune system.
Vitamin and Mineral Storage
The digestive breaks food down into protein, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins. When we have excess minerals and vitamins, they are stored on the bones to be used later when we need them.
Bone Growth
The pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands and sex organs release hormones into our bodies that heavily influence how large our bones will grow. One of the most influential hormones is somatotropin, commonly known as growth hormone.
