A soft phone is not an actual, physical phone. It is a phone program that operates on a computer. Soft phones have a number of advantages and some disadvantages as well.
Appearance
Soft phones generally take on the appearance of a traditional telephone. Sometimes they come up in their own window while other soft phones are integrated into other programs.
Features
A soft phone will generally feature the same things as a traditional phone such as call waiting, conference calling, hold and redial. There are some more advanced options for people or business' with the need for a multi-line system.
Function
Soft phones are used with either a keyboard or via an onscreen display. The speaker uses speakers or a headset and a microphone to carry out the phone call. The computer must be connected to a LAN or VoIP network in order to place or receive calls.
Benefits
Soft phones are often times cheaper than traditional phone plans and offer advantages to businesses conducting calling campaigns. They can generate files and statistics of the numbers they call which can help evaluate the campaign.
Negatives
Soft phones can crash if you have an unstable program or system. They also lose service if the Internet is down.
