A DV cable is used when connecting a digital video device such as a video camera or digital camera to another device such as a computer to transfer information.
Digital Camera
One of the functions of a DV cable is to connect a digital camera into your computer to upload video from the camera. You plug the mini end into the camera and the larger end into your computer. Once you turn the camera on, if you have a photo saving device on your computer such as iPhoto, it should open automatically and prompt you to upload your video.
Video Cameras
If you have a mini digital video camera, you can connect it to your computer using a DV cable. If you have a Mac equipped with iMovie, you can import your footage directly.
Utilizing Files
By connecting the DV cable from a camera (digital or video), the transfer of data is high quality, compressed video. You can then do whatever you like to the footage such as editing or uploading to YouTube.
Connect to Hard Drive
You can also connect the DV cable directly to your external hard drive to upload files directly.
Purchase
DV cables are also commonly referred to as Firewire cables. They can be purchased online or at any store that sells electronics and/or computer accessories.
