You cannot substitute Citracal for Fosamax. In fact, you might need to take them both. These products treat osteoporosis or thinning of the bones, especially in post-menopausal women.
History
Post-menopausal women and individuals who have taken corticosteroids may suffer from thinning of the bones or osteoporosis.
Features- Fosamax
Fosamax or bisphosphonate slows down the cells that cause bone loss. This drug also increases the amount of new bone deposited (See References 1).
Features-Citracal
Citracal requires no prescription and helps to prevent bone loss. Available over-the-counter, Citracal contains calcium citrate which the body easily absorbs (See References 2).
Types
Citracal comes in Regular, Plus, Maximum, Petites, Plus Heart Health with Phytosterols and Plus Bone Density Builder with Genistein. All formulations contain calcium citrate and Vitamin D.
Prevention/Solution
Men who take medications such as prednisone may be at risk for osteoporosis. Doctors prescribe Fosamax for men, as well as post-menopausal women.
