The pancreas is a gland located in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach, that produces enzymes that help with digestion. The pancreas is also responsible for insulin production.
Anatomic Abnormality
There are many potential causes of an enlarged pancreas. Some people have a pancreas that is larger than normal for no real medical reason. It is simply an anatomic abnormality.
Other Causes
Other reasons can include acute and chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), abcesses, tumors or cancer.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms include upper abdominal pain that can spread to the back. It often gets worse with eating and drinking, particularly in the case of pancreatitis.
Other Symptoms
Other symptoms of an enlarged pancreas include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, fever, a rapid pulse and jaundice.
Considerations
Some causes of an enlarged pancreas may not produce symptoms. According to WebMD, pancreatic cancer is considered one of the deadliest types of the disease because of its lack of symptoms. However, you should consult with your physician if experience any of the symptoms.
