<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Procelain Is Nonstick
Porcelain is a substance that is similar to a glass coating that is baked on drip pans. The porcelain provides the drip pan with a nonstick and nonstaining surface. According to General Electric, any nonporous cleaner can be used on porcelain including oven cleaners that contain sodium hydroxide, the harsh chemical that provides the cleaning power.
On the Other: Metal Is Not Nonstick
Raw metal drip pans such as stainless steel or aluminum cannot be cleaned with oven cleaners containing sodium hydroxide. The chemical will pit the raw metal according to the website, Soapman. Metal drip pans do not supply a nonstick surface.
Bottom Line
Porcelain is an easier material to keep clean. Since it is designed to be nonstick, it is safe to use a chemical cleaner on it if deposits become hard to remove. Because most of the metals used for drip pans can be ruined by strong cleaning chemicals, it appears that porcelain comes out on top according to the information from GE and Soapman.
