Sport hernia is a fascinating condition that is very misunderstood. The result of this misunderstanding can potentially lead to a misdiagnosis.
Dispelling the mystery
Sports hernias have various names. They include; athletic pubalgia, Gilmore's groin and groin disruption.
Location
A sports hernia is a tear in the lower abdominal muscles. Some describe it as a disruption of the inguinal canal that is resistive to treatment in the absence of a true hernia condition.
Symptoms
The condition can present with a multitude of symptoms they can range from mild groin to excruciating pain with sneezing and or coughing.
Diagnosis
A doctor will perform an examination and take a thorough medical history. As there are no test to confirm a diagnosis, a one is sometimes determined by ruling out conditions you don't have.
Treatment
The first steps in treatment are conservative. A provider my prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs and a regimen of ice packs after exercise. The most important treatment would be rest. The activity that brought on the pain must be ceased for a time of healing normally two to three weeks, but can be as long as several months. Less conservative treatment options include surgical options.
