  • According to CatsofAustralia.com, kidney (renal) failure is a common condition in older cats. When treating renal failure, it is important to find out the cause of the condition.

    Significance

The most common symptoms of kidney failure in cats are an increased consumption of water and increased time spent urinating in the litter box. When the kidneys are not functioning properly, the cat is unable to retain the amount of urine it could when healthy.

    Causes

According to the Feline CRF Information Center, the most common causes of kidney failure are age, genetics, environment and disease. Issues such as high blood pressure, low potassium and tooth disease all play a contributing role.

    Breeds

Some breeds are more prone to kidney failure than others. These breeds include Siamese, Russian Blue, Abyssinian, Maine Coon and Burmese.

    Vaccine

One cause of kidney disease is the vaccine for distemper. A link has been found that confirms the possibility of kidney inflammation as a result of the shot.

    Food

Cats that eat only dry food are more prone to kidney failure than those who eat both wet and dry food. Since wild cats get most of their moisture from eating meat, cats who eat dry food only are often perpetually dehydrated, which puts a strain on the kidneys.
