Help answer this question below.
Serotonin, or 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), is a transmitter found in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal track that is involved in numerous regulations and processes throughout the human body. Altered levels of serotonin, however, can be dangerous. Most of serotonin's responsibilities lie in the regulation of intestinal processes, but it's also involved in sleep, mood, appetite, brain memory and learning methods. The 5-HT system is targeted when treating depression. Most prescribed antidepressant drugs are Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and they alter serotonin levels. SSRIs meant to inhibit serotonin receptors can cause minor side effects such as dry mouth, sleeplessness, nausea, increased sweating, constipation and dizziness. A deficiency in serotonin can result in obesity, heart conditions and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and it may be the root cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Although rare and difficult to reach, a too high level of serotonin can result in the very dangerous and serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.Function
