Signs of Dementia
People with dementia commonly experience memory loss and as a result are unable to perform activities of daily living, such as dressing and bathing.
Signs of Alzheimer's Disease
People with Alzheimer's disease also experience memory loss and disorientation problems. In addition, people with Alzheimer's disease may lose or misplace things and often appear uncomfortable in their surroundings. Alzheimer's gets worse over time and is eventually fatal.
Causes of Alzheimer's and Dementia
Researchers believe a number of factors contribute to Alzheimer's disease and dementia, including a combination of environmental, genetic and lifestyle.
Treatment
Two types of drugs, cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine, are used to treat Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Cholinesterase inhibitors work by increasing levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. Memantine works by regulating the chemicals involved in brain functioning such as learning and memory.
Support
Individuals with Alzheimer's disease and dementia may need additional support from family and friends. Additionally, people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia may benefit from support group to deal with the feelings of anger, loss and frustration.
