  • There are a few reasons you might want to take apart the display panel of your Gateway laptop: a broken screen, a loose connection or to learn. Taking apart laptops is more difficult than disassembling a desktop, but it can be done. Take your time and do not force anything. It is easy to break parts in a laptop, as they are designed to fit together in a specific way.

    Find the Screws

Laptop displays are held in place by a combination of screws and pieces that snap together. Look around the front, back and sides of the panel for recesses for the screws. They might be covered by little circles of rubber that will need to be removed. Some screws hold the back panel on; some hold the front cover on. If you want to completely take the display off the computer, you will most likely need to remove the panel directly in front of the hinges. This panel should be relatively thin, stopping as it hits the top of the keyboard, and have screws at the ends or on the sides. There will be more screws or some mechanism holding the hinges together.

    The Connectors

Locate the display cable. It should be an inch or so wide and the widest of the connectors going to the display. Depending on what you're doing, you might want to unplug this cable. The connector might be under the keyboard, which you can take off by removing the panel in front of the hinges and unscrewing the screws holding it in place. Don't force the connector, as it can be easily damaged. There will be another few connectors that can be removed from the display or the computer side.

    Disassembly

Once the crews are removed, the back panel and the frame of the screen, also called a bezel, can be pried off. Be careful when doing so, if it feels like you're forcing it, recheck that all screws are removed. When they are removed there should be a metal panel on the back that can also be removed, but continue to be careful; LCD screens can contain mercury and touching their innards can be harmful.
