    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Although it is most commonly used in Asian cuisine, rice paper has not always been edible. For centuries, it has been used for writing, printing and painting.

    Types

There are various types of rice paper, such as edible rice paper, pith paper and water-soluble paper. According to rice-paper.com, these variations have different purposes found in cooking, watercolor and embroidery.

    Function

Edible rice paper is used in many Asian cuisines, usually as wrappers for spring rolls. Pith paper is used for painting and watercoloring, and water-soluble rice paper is mostly used as supportive backing for fabrics.

    Notable

The main characteristic of general rice paper is its ability to withstand time and wear, as it is rotproof and mothproof, Rice-paper.com states. It is used so frequently in Asia because of its durability.

    Ingredients

Edible rice paper is a combination of white rice powder and tapioca flour. Once mixed, it is spread evenly over a surface to be steamed and dried. Generally non-edible rice paper can be made with different fibers such as bamboo, mulberry and Tetrapanax papyrifera, also known as the rice paper plant.

    Origin

Originally made in South China in the town of Xuancheng, rice paper was produced by a small papermaking family, notes rice-paper.com.
