  • The advent of digital music made it possible to stockpile massive amounts of music on a computer, providing both compact storage and portability. If you have a new computer and want to move your music to it, you have several options, depending on your comfort level with computers, how much there is to move and your particular hardware set-up. As with all music transfers, be aware of copyright regulations.

    Burning CDs

If you have purchased and saved a small amount of online music and wish to move it to your new computer, burn a disc on your old computer and copy it to your new one. The advantage is that you will have a CD copy of the music, which you can use in your car or elsewhere. Importing the new CD to your music software on the new computer (ripping it), ensures that the music is properly installed in the database. This is also the simplest way to move the music if you don't have a lot of computer knowledge. The downside is that it is the slowest method of transferring the files, and impracticable for larger amounts of music. There is also the added expense of the CD.

    Portable memory drive

Using a flash drive or other portable memory is another way to transfer music from one computer to another. Find the music files stored on your old computer. If you are organized, they should be grouped together in the same folder or directory, most likely broken down by artist. Once the portable drive is inserted in your old computer, just drag the entire contents of your music library over to it. Then remove it and plug the drive into the new computer. To copy to the new computer, drag the files into your music playback program if you use one. Again, this will ensure that the files are properly logged in the database. If you just copy the files onto the hard drive, you won't be able to play the music through your playback system without re-importing the files.

    Cables

If you have a Mac, you can use a firewire cable to transfer files directly from computer to computer in target drive mode. With the old computer as the target, it will appear as a drive on the new computer. If you have a PC, use a USB networking cable (different from a regular USB cable) to link the two computers and transfer the music files.
