<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: It Supposedly Helps
Those in support of colon cleansing claim numerous health benefits from the procedure. According to heathguidance.org, the process rids the body of toxins that could lead to physical ailments such as arthritis, asthma, bloating and nausea. Other claimed advantages include weight loss, better absorption of vitamins and regulation of bowel movements.
On the Other: It's Unnecessary
According to Dr. Michael Picco of the Mayo Clinic, colon cleansing is completely unnecessary. The body is naturally designed to rid itself of waste and toxins, so any pills or procedures to do the same put the body under unneeded stress. He also says the process can be dangerous. There is an increased risk of dehydration and certain laxatives used during the process can be harmful to people with kidney problems.
Bottom Line
Anyone considering the procedure should check with his doctor to discuss whether it is a good idea. Medications and secondary health problems could mean the process would be harmful. Beware of inflated claims that colon cleansing will drastically improve health.
