  • Glow sticks, also called light sticks, typically contain a hydrogen peroxide solution, a solution containing phenyl oxalate ester and a fluorescent dye. Ingredients are kept separated inside the glow stick by two chambers. Hydrogen peroxide is contained in a small, fragile glass vile in the middle of the stick. Once the glow stick is snapped and the ingredients are mixed, the reaction causes the stick to glow.
