Epilepsy is a frightening disorder causing involuntary movements and loss of consciousness. While horses do not commonly suffer from epilepsy, it is very important for pet owners to understand the signs and symptoms of this condition.
Uncontrollable Twitching And Chewing
Twitching in the face and legs, as well as sudden chewing motions, self mutilation and compulsive running are signs of a partial seizure, which is the first sign of epilepsy in equine.
Pacing And Anxiety
Unusual amounts of anxiety, restlessness and constant pacing are all signs that a horse will soon suffer a seizure, the most common symptom of epilepsy.
Loss of Consciousness
Horses suffering from epilepsy often lose consciousness without warning, which may lead to serious injury.
Violent Physical Movement
Disturbing violent movement such as kicking, chewing, thrashing and symmetrical muscle spasms after loss of consciousness is consistent with generalized seizures. This type of seizure is a clear indicator of epilepsy.
Incontinence
Incontinence in equine which are without a history of control issues is a sign of epilepsy. Horses affected by this condition suffer sudden urinary and fecal incontinence.
